Skywatch Friday - Minarets in Bijapur, Karnataka

Bijapur in Karnataka is known for its Adil Shahi monuments. Especially the "Gol Gumbaz" which is the second largest dome in the world and is the star attraction of Bijapur. The other well known monument is "Ibrahim Rauza" which was initially constructed as a palace for one of the queens of sultan but later converted into a mausoleum for the family.

While the "Ibrahim Rauza" complex is beautifully symmetrical and set amidst a spacious garden, we clicked this picture while coming out today. Suddenly these six minarets in one frame caught the eye and against a blue sky with few clouds, looked different from what we had seen earlier.

It happens to us many times. Apart from the main attraction, we will get to see interesting stuff in places we travel. This was one such occasion.

The Bijapur is looking very nice and attractive place. I have never visited it before and never ever heard about that. I am happy to read about this historical monument because I am a huge fan of history. I visited India twice a time in my life and explore its many attractions and cities like Taj Mahal, Lotus Temple,Laal Qila, All beaches of Goa, Darjeeling, Shimla, Kufri, Manali, Varansi, Ahmadabad, Chandigarh, Delhi and Mumbai. I know these places very well. Now I am thinking to visit again of its others historical places like Bijapur after coming from niagara falls tours. I am sure it will prove to be a worthwhile tour.

Thanks Aliha. You should now travel to South India which has amazing historical sites including four UNESCO World Heritage Sites. You can check on some of them in this blog. Bijapur is good place to explore its many monuments and was a thriving city in 15th century.

I have been to Bijapur and I must say that it is a great place for an outing. I visited Gol Gumbaz last year, it is one of the most beautiful monuments in Karnataka. If you are in Bijapur you must definitely check out this place.

The minarets at Bijapur look truly impressive. I wonder why I do not get to hear a lot about these on different travel blogs. Thanks for sharing these lovely images. Hope to visit the place personally someday. Wonder when that would be possible.

Thanks Varun. Glad you liked it! You are correct. Bijapur and Bidar are off the regular tourist circuit. That is the reason you don't hear from many.
